The article indicated that China’s sub fleet is reportedly the world’s second-largest, with about 70 vessels. About 10 are nuclear-powered, and four or more of those are nuclear ballistic submarines capable of launching missiles…”
Chinese planning for nuclear attacks on the U.S. are frighting to contemplate:
“Because the Midwest states of the U.S. are sparsely populated, in order to increase the lethality, [our] nuclear attacks should mainly target the key cities on the West Coast of the United States, such as Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego”, according to the Times.
“The 12 JL-2 nuclear warheads carried by one single Type 094 SSBN can kill and wound 5 million to 12 million Americans,” the Times reported.
In 2010 a report detailed a possible launch of a missile off the California coast was a dry run that proved the capability of a Chinese sub to get close enough to launch a missile at the U.S. and get away with it.
We have also been following reports since early 2009 of China’s development of “kill weapons” designed to sink U.S. aircraft carriers.
In 2013 China’s PLA “sunk” a U.S. aircraft carrier during a war game in remote China using its DF-21D “Carrier Killer” missile (source: China sinks US carrier in the Gobi desert - see video).
It should be noted that in the event of war the Chinese military maintains a credible “second strike” capability through its extensive 3000 kilometer underground tunnel complex housing upwards to 3-4000 long range nuclear weapons.
