7 December 2013 - Sweden has just announced that they will play host to self-driving cars in the next couple of years. England, Japan, Singapore and the U.S. have already announced that they will host fleets of self-driving automobiles, but Sweden’s 100-car strong automotive army will be the first manufactured by Volvo.

By 2017, Volvo plans to introduce all 100 of its self-driving cars to the streets of Gothenburg, a city with nearly half a million residents. As opposed to the plans set out for England’s Milton Keynes and America’s Ann Arbor, Gothenburg’s autonomous cars will not be shared, public vehicles. Instead, 100 lucky customers will be given the opportunity to ride around in a car that does their driving for them.

Rather than dedicated tracks, these 100 autonomous cars will drive on 30 miles of public roads, through real traffic patterns. The end goal for Volvo is to have an expanded fleet of self-driving cars, capable of driving their owners anywhere they please. Volvo’s pledge is for no drivers to be killed or seriously injured due to operator error by 2020.
