A suspect lit himself on fire while trying to steal gas in Portland Sunday, police said.
Just after 11 a.m., 62-year-old Harry Frederick Suniville stole a partially-filled gas can from a truck and began pouring the gas into his vehicle while he smoked a cigarette near Southwest 11th Avenue and Southwest Columbia Street, said Sgt. Pete Simpson with Portland police.
The gasoline then ignited, burning Suniville’s socks and pants, and singeing his eyebrows and hair, Simpson said.
Firefighter s extinguished the fire and paramedics treated Suniville before he was arrested and charged with criminal mischief, reckless burning, and theft, Simpson said.
Suniville’s vehicle was damaged and towed from the scene.
