33-year-old Lewis Atwood was charged domestic violence and domestic violence – third offense in the incident.
Just before 2 a.m. Saturday, Allegan County dispatch received a 911 call from a home in the 6600 block of 111th Avenue, but there wasn’t anyone on the line, according to a release from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office.
The 911 dispatcher could reportedly hear yelling in the background, and a woman who was screaming, “You are hurting me!”
Deputies soon showed up at the home and were able to get the situation under control.
They learned that the suspect, his girlfriend, his mother and brother had been decorating their Christmas tree.
Atwood had been drinking and was intoxicated, sheriff’s officials said. When Atwood noticed that his 58-year-old mother had an ornament with his brother’s name on it and none with his own name on it, Atwood got angry and pushed past the others, attacked his mother and punched her in the face as many as five times.
Atwood's mother had a bloody nose and swollen eye and lip, and the suspect had injuries on his knuckles, sheriff’s officials said.
24 Hour News 8 spoke to the victim Monday night. She says that she believes her son just snapped and that he wouldn't have attacked her if he hasn't been drinking so much. She said that Atwood brought the alcohol to her house that night.
Deputies arrested Atwood and took him to the Allegan County jail, where he’s lodged on a $5,000 cash or surety bond.
Lewis Atwood has faced domestic violence charges before; twice in 2002 and once in 2006. He pled guilty to one of the 2002 charges and no contest to the other 2002 charge and the 2006 charge.
